Happy New Year and welcome back!!! We hope everyone is staying healthy and enjoyed the long winter break 🙂 Just a reminder that students will still have the same special for an entire week.  Next week will be Art.

Overview January 25th - 29th

Letterland - Our next unit will include words with the vowel groups or, ear, and er . Please make sure students complete their word work each day in their journals, take the pretest, play the games and take the final test on Friday (Vocabulary A to Z). 

Reading - We will continue our unit on Fossils and Paleontologist this week.  Students will be learning more about fossils and the tools paleontologist use to dig them up. Students will practice becoming detectives by looking closely at pictures and searching for evidence to draw conclusions. We will also be learning about non fiction text features (captions, headings, etc) and how they help us better understand the text. 

Math: Students will be practicing expressing 3 digit numbers by using number form, place value drawings, word form, and expanded form. We will also be skip counting by 5's, 10's and 100's using 3 digit numbers to count up to 1000. Students will be looking for patterns as they are skip counting to gain a better understanding of numbers. 

Science: We will be starting our Weather unit to discover how the sun affects the earth and how we get energy from the sun. Later in the unit they will be learning about weather instruments, types of clouds, the water cycle, and how meteorologists predict the weather. This week students will be discovering the importance of the sun and how it affects the earth. 

Please follow-up with your students each week to make sure they have completed 30 minutes in Istation and 5 lessons in Dreambox.

We will be checking student activity (minutes completed) in our Teacher portals.

Reading - We started our unit Fossils and Paleontologist this week. We have been learning about Mary Anning, a paleontologist who lived on the coast of Lyme Regis. Next week we will be reading the story of her life and discussing how paleontologist use tools to dig up fossils. We will also be retelling the story, learning how to use events, characters and settings to write about the beginning, middle, and end. 

Math: The students have enjoyed learning how to tell time on an analog clock. Please continue having them practice to the 5 minute mark. We will begin learning about arrays and how they are arranged in rows and columns. They will also learn how to write an equation to express the total of a sum of equal addends (4+4+4=12).

Social Studies: We enjoyed learning about timelines, how they are used, and how to gain important information about them. They created thier own timelines last week and I enjoyed learning more about your children. This week we will be researching historical figures and thier impact on society. 

Wake County Updates

Wake County wants students to be using Dreambox and Istation on a weekly basis. 

Istation practice will be on Thursday next week for 30 minutes

Dreambox will be scheduled throughout the week depending on the math lessons. 

Please follow-up with your students each week to make sure they have completed 30 minutes in Istation and 4 lessons in Dreambox.

September 8 - 11

We've had a busy week with students, meeting in small groups for math and Istation instruction. Students enjoyed the story "The Invisible Boy" and learning how the author uses both text and illustrations to bring meaning to the characters. In math students learned how to take on online quiz and manipulate objects on Google Slides.

*Please make sure students have the following supplies near their work area during the school day:

      Composition books -  Word Work, Math, Writing Journal, and Math Binder with hole punched math pages from Wake County

Next week at a glance:

Letterland: Unit 3 includes double consonants and ing endings. There will be daily activities in the Word Work Journal as well as Kids A to Z spelling practice. Please make sure students take the spelling pretest and the final spelling test at the end of the week. 

EL - Unit 1 School and Community 

We will continue evaluating "The Invisible Boy" and discussing how the main character feels throughout the story.  Follow up activities will be in their journals and in the Google Classroom. 

Math - In math we will be looking at different strategies to add and subtract within 20. The strategies we will be using are making ten, counting on, relating addition to subtraction, and doubles. Please make sure students have their math pages in their binders for asynchronous time. 

Science -  We will continue with our study of our sound unit. Vocabulary that they will learn to use includes, vibration, pitch and volume. Students will be given a project at the end of the week to build an instrument at home. They will be using recycled materials to create the project. Additional supplies will not be needed.

September 14 - 18

We've had a great week, and are starting to settle into a routine with our students. We have enjoyed learning about their favorite activities, their adorable pets, and their exciting adventures they have planned! 

This week we started meeting in small groups in both reading and math. Small groups are held right after our Live Lesson ends. In reading we are practicing fluency, and decoding by reading the Letterland Play. In math we are going over the math concept of the day, and practicing our math skills.

Science -  Next week we will begin our unit on sound. Students will discover how sound is produced by vibrating objects, and how sound travels through the air in waves.

August 31 - Sept. 4

We are off to a great start! Students have been busy learning how to navigate the Google Classroom, turn in their work, view comments from teachers, and participate throughout the day in Google Meets. We are so proud of how much they have learned in such a short time! We have been very busy in our virtual classrooms.

EL - Unit 1 Schools and Communities 

We will be discussing schools, what we learn, and how schools are different in communities around the world. Follow up activities in EL workbook and assignments in Google Classroom. 

Math - In math we will practice adding with number lines, measuring distance by making paper airplanes, and using what we know about numbers to decide if they are odd or even. Please make sure their student math pages are in their binders for next week. 

Social Studies -  We will be discussing more about our community, and the different workers we rely on in our local community. We will also be learning about laws and how it is important to follow them.
